as for unix... one thing i can say is FreeBSD is really a very cool (need i need to mention fast and reliable) OS for the intel platform... i have many adventures with linux, but FreeBSD is really something you would love after you have tinkered enough linux ek ek... but linux is a very good place to start learning unix tho...
