Boing Boing: Everything Bad is Good for You: How TV and games make us smarter... hmmn... wish i could find one at the local bookstore...

the last time i had read a real book (and i haven't even finished reading it yet), as opposed to an ebook was a book entitled "How to discipline a child without shouting and spanking". boy! you can't even begin to imagine the weird look on people's faces on the MRT when they saw me reading it. now that was disorienting.

Is Linux For Losers? - Forbes.com

let the flamewars begin... :))

i think linux is *great* for desktops/laptops. but i'm still biased to freebsd and openbsd on the server front. hmnnnn, haven't tried opensolaris yet. my memories of good ol' solaris is still fresh, those machines (oozing cool blue sex appeal) were way slicker than the macs of today.

yesterday, was rojan's first day at school. the hard part is waking her up at 6am. after the initial crying session, and she got dressed up everything went smoothly. as when she was fully awake the excitement of going to school got her to forget the need to go back to her pillow.

both nhelle and i accompanied her to school. Excited as I am, its no match to my wife's excitement.

the added bonus was the kwento-kwento during dinner where rojan gets to narrate what happened in school. the only downside is the 10 month old janro seems a bit sad when her sister was away.
life is a blur.

had a fantastic weekend up north in a place called botolan zambales. nothing beats swimming with 3 feet high waves. food was great, everything fresh and hand picked from a nearby organic farm. seafoods galore!

went with rojan, she had a blast playing in the sand.

when its time for my sunset, i want to retire to a place like this. somewhere in bicol :)

GNOME Bluetooth Control Remoto (GBTcr)... wicked! too bad my lappy doesn't have a bluetooth module. still waiting for pareng winston's advice on how much does it cost in hk as i can't find a shop that sells a dell bluetooth module here that is compatible with the 600m series.
Just finished watching The School of Rock (2003). needless to say, it rocks :D
hehe, enjoying ka edong's Technobiography: Hotspot Hunting Episodes. my oh my. getting a internet connection is rather trivial in urban areas nowadays.

waiting for episode 1...
Linux radio show - LugRadio... been listening to this whilst on the daily mrt trips. lot's of swearing, but generally entertaining and provides a way to listen to the actual voices on some of the popular persons behind open source. i particularly like the mono discussion with de icaza. insightful comments there on both the pros and cons.
Istanbul - GStreamer... great for screencasting!

Maemo SDK Tutorial... gotta love this developer docs!
Nokia - Nokia 770, bummer... you can't use it as a phone... voip perhaps? cant find where the mic and speaker is placed. but it does have bluetooth.

now this competes with palm's lifedrive, albeit 4gig seems to be on the lifedrive's favor. on the linux front, this one goes head to head with the zaurus product line.

more reason to pursue my "as titilating as the wet corners of the mind" pet project. but damn, its a bit akward to go back to developing stand alone apps when you're basically surrounded by 365 degrees of server side programming in the past few years.
Nokia - Nokia 770 runs on linux! way to go nokia!!! palm, do take the hint ;)

Google personalized page also supports drag and drop for arranging your portlets... google's javascript hackers really rock!
Personalized Google... hmmnn... getting more portal like as each day passes by eh?

i like the quote of the day feature... i just hope it could be much more like the fortune cookies that unix has... and word for day is a nice feature too. today's word -> suffuse: spread through or over; to flush; so instead of saying " flush me baby" you can say "suffuse me baby... suffuse me".. . the latter sounds a bit sexier...

Plugins in Mono... a good place to start for my "an idea as titilating as the wet corners of the mind" pet project...

wonder what it would take if we can form a community that aims to build on ubuntu's success and produce a distro based on that with the typical Filipino desktop user in mind. bundle that with the ongoing tl translations and massive word of the mouth campaign and just maybe, just maybe, we could have something better than the current efforts to bring open source to mainstream pinoy desktop users.

Miguel de Icaza comment's on firefox search model that takes away the annoying popup dialog box for searches. mentioned there was that the feature has been available for emacs and xemacs forever.

managed to get the acegi working at last!!!

the current getting started articles on the web are quite confusing... now is the time i really wished i had not slept on english class... it would make writing tutorial type articles easier...

at any rate, i will take a stab at doing an article about acegi authentication for web applications soon...

got this from the jaredean blog... Main Page - FreeMind - free mind mapping software... just exactly what i need to visualize an itch i need to scratch...

the problem with open source is the itch in question constitutes of gargantuan monstrosity and as an individual you only have pin sized wooden scratcher? in hand... :))
after relentless qwerty pushing, i managed to fix this Spring Framework :: View topic - weird xsl form behavior on 1.2-RC2...

the culprit is the getStylesheetSource() of the AbstractXsltView class... it gets stuck to the first xslt you call... so the template used to cache xslt for performace reasons will repeatedly call the same pre compiled stylesheet even if you are calling a different xslt file...

if you dig spring xsl, this
spring.jar will save you from cursing the console...

but be warned i havent tried it with other application servers aside from resin, so this problem might be resin specific as i am using resin's xslt classes for the transformation (e.g. jaxp javax.xml.transform.TransformeryFactory is set to com.caucho.xsl.XSL)... you can use other jaxp compatible implementation like xalan if needed...

yes, i am being punished for sticking to xslt for the view component...

now, back to the acegi thingy...
*sigh*... seems am the only one trying to use springs mvc xsl view... Spring Framework :: View topic - weird xsl form behavior on 1.2-RC2

jim paredes' blog Writing On Air... truly inspiring...
since my goal is to be able to run the webapp to other application servers aside from resin, container managed authentication and authorization doesnt fit the bill. now am looking at acegi so that it would inflict less pain when switching applications servers. i found a nice intro to acegi in this article -> Javalobby - Java J2EE Programming Forums - Securing Your Java Applications - Acegi Security Style...
previously i was using this format for loading my spring context files:

String configFiles[] = {"/applicationContext-orm.xml", "/applicationContext-manager.xml",
"/applicationContext-wrapper.xml"};

these require that you copy the context files to your webapps WEB-INF/ directory.

but if you want to carry it around your jar for convenience you can also use the classpath syntax:

String configFiles[] = {"classpath:applicationContext-orm.xml", "classpath:applicationContext-manager.xml",
"classpath:applicationContext-wrapper.xml"};

this is relative to your jar's classpath.

of weekends and kung fu movies:

had a nice long weekend... family time as usual. rented a couple of kung-fu inspired movies like kung fu hustle, crouching tiger hidden dragon and house of flying daggers. kung fu hustle was a good one, its like watching those popular dragon ball z fight sequences done by live actors. crouching tiger was a bit boring, house of flying daggers was much much better.

of java and the spring frameworK:

also finally managed to port some apps to spring mvc. to those using xsl as your view component, stay away from version 1.2 for the meantime. it has a bug that causes the improper view to appear.

the nice thing about this framework is there's a tendency for the developer think about modular code. for example: i use to have methods goes something like getTransactionsByDateInXML in the service layer. this is neatly separated in spring mvc via a separate object doing the DOMification.

of blogging:

read that there will be an ongoing blog summit. varying topics to be discussed seems to be fun. way back memory lane the early form of blogging was thru publishing .plan's or creating just static pages full of todo's and random notes for the day. then it was migrated to personal online journals. i think the blog summit should also emphasize on the idea that blogs are personal. a lot of blogs started that way. you don't care about traffic, and even content. you write what you want to write. if people stumbled on your blog and say it sucks, tell them its YOUR blog and you can write whatever you wanted to write. nobody should care if 90% of your entries goes like "nothing happend today, so i have nothing to blog".

but then, if your aim is to be a blog star, then by all means, study the medium. create mind-boggling, thought-provoking, etc etc content. but if its not your aim, just do it, write it, its all about freedom. but then, it only applies to you, think twice when what you write is not about yourself.

of cs teachers and profs:

sometimes i cant fathom why students complain that their teachers arent relatively linus torvald's like material. and most specially if its students of top notch universities. compared to what i have gone thru, studying cs in the province (where resourcefullness is a must to be able to keep up with the times), i think those kids are very lucky. man, look at how they write, their english writing skills are to die for. i think they are still much, much fortunate compared to the majority of the student population who has to go thru sub-standard colleges. they have the resources and facilities. i think the main problem is the lack of SELF-MOTIVATION. the ability recognize these challenges as opportunities. in reality, their diploma stating what school they graduated is already considered an ace. so heck, why dont they just ride thru it and just spend their energy on honing their skillsets thru PRACTICE. indeed, more often than not, we see students who thinks you can learn everything by reading, or, pray tell, spoon feeding. for short, happy enough they know how it works in theory, only to curse the console later in life. also, there seems to be lack of of focus on learning the fundamental problem solving skills nowadays. indeed, we have a lot of people wandering around who knows the syntax well enough, but seems to have great difficulty when, and where to use them.

*sigh* spur of the moment blogging. my apologies if its crap. its my blog... whatever....
here's my rather normal, conservative look:

and posting xml-xsl examples is not for the faint of heart... i have to google to find out that it takes an xmp tag to display xml on html properly...

Monday, April 25, 2005

many summers ago (since we dont have winter), i used to write html input type default value in xsl like this:

our simple xml:

<page>
<input_value>hello xm-xsl world</input_value>
</page>

first we declare an xsl variable like so:

<xsl:variable name="input_value">
<xsl:value-of select="page/input_value"/>
</xsl:variable>

then we write our html input like so:

<input type="text" name="text" value="{$input_value}"/>

resulting to a boring html input box with a default value of "hello xml world"...

recently discovered there's another way to do it via . using the sample xml above we can create a similar output with:

<xsl:element name="input">
<xsl:attribute name="type">text</xsl:attribute>
<xsl:attribute name="name">text</xsl:attribute>
<xsl:attribute name="value"><xsl:value-of select="page/input_value"/></xsl:attribute>
</xsl:element>

if page/input_value doesnt exist it simply produces a blank input box. the default value is commonly used when validating a form and you want to retain the user inputted values but wanting to do some fancy label highlighting of the offending fields...
speaking of june, my eldest would already start going to school... rojan had a perfect score at her entrance exam... my wife is the one responsible for this achievement, as she can still find time to teach rojan the basics amidst her hectic schedule... the school said rojan can already be accelerated to kinder... but we decided that would be too much and we still want her to enjoy being a kid... am really excited to see her wearing her first school uniform and make "kwento" about her first day in school...
Digital Life by Chin Wong -- This old notebook... nice article.. i feel rather stupid whining about one stuck pixel on my lappy... but then again i aint no rich fellow with much disposable income... so i feel pain even if its just a single stuck pixel... as june drew nearer, life's competing priorities will come in full force... and i wonder if i will be able to have the luxury to buy one again... crossing my fingers this thing will last me at least 3 years at the minimum... but would really be happy if would extend to 5 years and hopefully it would still be suited to run the current breed of applications by that time...

i'd say coding and cooking have much in common... there are many ways to solve a particular problem domain as there are many ways to to cook a particular dish... both has a distinct science at the background... the more exotic the solution/dish the more complicated it gets....

that said... the spring framework documentation direly needs some diagram lovin'...

post on smart's SIP contest...

there's also another ongoing VOIP contest at http://www.callforconvergence.com. more oriented to the Voice XML... so i guess its official: VOIP is going mainstream locally...

anyway it would be nice to monitor these developments and see what kind of apps the contestants would submit... ideas? dunno if x10 devices are available locally or are still in production... but you can create a VOIP app to manage those devices... text to speech app would also be great for newsfeeds, blogfeeds, traffic, weather etc (on asterisk this can be done via festival)... on the crappy side you can have it preview your favorite moan/mp3 tone before downloading... the list of cool apps goes on...

wonder what the smart sip contest platform would be?

This is a test post from flickr, a fancy photo sharing thing.
been googling around if there exists a yahoo messenger client for the SE T630 (which until now can only send mms messages by the way, its a problem on Globe's end and its almost a month now since i started bugging 730-1000... but still no solution in sight)...i stumbled upon this -> Yamigo - It's a Wireless Village... a single registration page is all you need to use this service... then you configure your my friends app on the t630 and viola! you can now chat with your yahoo, msn, icq, jabber? mates... i initially had trouble logging on since the yamigo howto seems to imply i have to use an internet gprs account... i experimented using the gprs wap account and was able to login just fine... however, this service/app relies on a polling mechanism so messages are not recieved in realtime like in agile messenger... you can set it on either 2 minute, 4 minute and 10 minute intervals... it works so am happy! its better than the plain yahoo messenger wap (more after this) because i get alerted when a new message comes in, just like a regular sms message does...

anyway, if need to chat in realtime i still have several options: if its local, simply text the person ;-) if its not and i have the clie with me, then i can go the wifi or do the pda+phone+gprs combo...

am just curious on the costs... if this thing rides on gprs wap then am charged at .15 centavos per kb... way cheaper than the 1 peso per text rate... or 15 pesos for international texting... i hope yahoo become widespread on the mobile front as it allows us to circumvent the madly overpriced rate of text messages...

if all phones are equiped with at least a decent useable wap browser it can also use this Yahoo Messenger via WAP... THESE COULD GREATLY EXTEND the number of messages you can send (assuming your reciever also has a wap capable phone)... MORE POWER TO THE CENTAVO! i dont know if its futile to spread this idea to the masa... the learning curve is a bit steeper than that of plain sms...

so there you have it... VOIP for cheap voice calls and IM for cheaper text messeges... of course, the infrastructure is controlled/owned by the telcos... relatively trivial for them to block wap access for example (walled garden approach)... so these might only be possible now... and later on just become a distant dream... wonder if i should also write about nonsense dreams... ala ka edong's dream... *sigh*... its almost 3am again...

so far, as of last wednesday... the degatto managed to resurrect itself by inflicting massive pain (a.k.a. P9,000.00) to my already anguished pockets... slap another P1,000.00 for diagnostics and labor... on the bright side, i have a new motherboard that i wont worry if it breaks down in the next 12 months...

(when lappy was away...)

downtime means more fun time with these guys...

abundant supply of youthful ebullience...

also spent time chasing a woman in iron thongs... going back in forth between the present and the past... learned a few sword tricks and kickass combo moves... grapple and swing at nearby trees... life is action packed when you are the prince of persia discovering the warrior within...

wifey and i also had a great time kicking and punching each other on dragonball z... a nice way to bond... had a great time... as we are both motivated by the fact that the loser will be the one to clean the dishes... i often won, but women had an inborn talent of using charm to coerce you to do their bidding ;-)

i like this quote from nat friedman from Planet GNOME...

"users should like us for our software, not for our working habbits..."

somewhat related to the issue of code quality... code quality fades into the background once the binary is shipped... users will never know how elegantly the code was designed or how much sleepless nights it has incurred on us codaholics... at the end of the day, all that matters is how good the user experience is...

but code quality can undeniably lead to a better binary product... so its not an excuse to at least learn the basics of producing high quality code... there must always be a balance of things... i have read somewhere that linus torvalds strives to have code that can be easily understood by many, while alan cox cares more about stability or code that reliably works (at the expense of code quality)...

Thursday, March 03, 2005

been rather busy (who isn't anyways?)... we moved to the 3rd floor, previously a first floor dweller on this hole in a wall type apartments... a bit cramped since this one has two rooms and a real kitchen but almost same sized as old one... a bit safer here since i could go out the patio even at 3am in the morning... new computer table, more conducive to coding...

been also very busy refactoring the message filters at work.... i like these new setup better... most things can be configured via spring's applicationcontext.xml... still cant make wap work, so its frustratingly annoying... cant find a decent debugger that runs directly on the mobile phone...

pareng edwin, sensya na, i still owe you that PICS M-congress cd... will advice you next week if we can meet in makati...the entire cd contents can still be downloaded here... but will still try to give you the cd next week...

oh well, just too weak and too busy... frantically remembering how to smile and how to be happy.... hopefully i get to go home to bicol on the 18th... the sight of mayon in legaspi can definitely be refreshing... better get ready to pack the clie with a good amount of ebooks... still halfway thru lessig's "free culture"... interesting arguments on intellectual property rights and it's relative history...

Tuesday, February 22, 2005

grrrr... cant seem to make wap work... apache settings already include provisions for .wml... i can access it thru tagtag.com emulator but no dice on the actual cellphone... i could see the get request on the log so connection is not the problem... wml is not the problem either as i downloaded a working wml file that the phone can access... i think it needs more apache tweaking... everything is on port 80... hmmnn... hhmmmmnnnn....

and no, am not describing kitchie... wifey my labidabs, youre still the most beautiful woman i ever met... post valentine musings...

i think i need to gobble up some caffeine...
browsing thru warrenm's initial commit on patriot... interesting... doofus nox! you have to finish reading the JSR-212 spec first for this stuff to somehow sink into the left? side of your brain...

on another context, its really ironic that sms application developers locally seems to be more geared towards providing content (artistaaa, ring tones etc etc etc)... only a small percentage gets to deploy other types of sms applications... not surprising really as getting a short access code will require that the telco likes you... or else your ideas would end up down the drain... only that a few months later you say fuck! isnt that the same thing that they say "its not possible, due to this and this... or, we will just get back to you as we need to discuss these more internally... but really, that might not go well with legal..." what the hell is wrong with this people? why cant short access codes be a simple process as getting a landline or registering your domain... if its like that (sans the ability to broadcast , since everybody then can do sms spam) we could be seeing more innovative applications than those that we have today... with the current revenue share, it would be favorable to the telcos... its not far eftched that in the future, CSP's would die and all applications will be developed internally or by a telco owned spin off company... as the sassy laywer mentioned -> greed

*sigh*... its really futile to restrain your fingers (frenetic at 100wpm) to type fcuk when you meant to type "suck! or the generally milder oh my gulay!"... from patriot to arm chair activist... that was disorienting...

so the name "Rogelio" started in the 1910's and by 2003 there are about 489 per million babies with that name (?)... i also tried my children's name "rojan" and "janro" and it came out zero... originality at work here... =)

of course whats worth noticing here is the increasing slickness of javascript geeks... from maps to google suggest... the new era of webapps? really curious how this is implemented... data pushed from the servers and javascript lovin to adumbrate the rest!
Bomb blasts rock Davao, General Santos, Makati - INQ7.net what i dont really get is why innocent people has to die so that other people can get their point across... how i wish i could just telecommute from bicol... things like this makes me wary as i commute daily...

this boy, (apparently my son) relentlessly trying to inculcate me his naturally impish smile and youthful ebullience...

a few years back, Kodak Moments (TM) like this would mean making sure you have a bulky film camera loaded with ample battery power for a hit and miss affair with overexposed and underexposed picture kung-fu...

kids today are soooo lucky...
old habbits die hard... been using java for the past few years and am still using System.out.println for debugging (turning it off on production by runing a script that puts "//" on all System.out statements)... lately however due to an increasing addiction to junit i took the plunge and now as heavily addicted as well to log4j... the commons-logging was a welcome addition to the toolset as this somewhat allows you to choose other logging frameworks...

log.debug() is now a focker...
fckeditor... awesome! javascript is increasingly being more and more powerful these days...

ubuntu users using the ndiswrapper module with an MSI CB54G wifi card, you need to set RadioState on your /etc/ndiswrapper//*.conf equal to 0 as the default behavior of ndiswrapper -i ms68bm.inf is to set it to 1 which turns off the power this wifi card...

hmmnn... am not yet free from manually editing config files even on uber-user-friendly ubuntu... :(

i seriously think that bayanihan linux should shift its efforts on making a filipino centric version of Ubuntu... slap a java sdk on this thing and you have one really complete windows replacement that can cover a wide range of users...

IMHO... KDE sucks...

after a crazy attempt to do semi-fine grained layering of persistence, business logic, front-end friendly wrappers with spring i was puzzled on how to proceed creating unit tests that would work on all layers... each layer has its own applicationcontext.xml file aptly named applicationcontext-orm.xml, applicationcontext-manager.xml and applicationcontext-wrapper.xml... my utility class for loading the application context file could only accept a single string... calling it twice would result in spring only remembering the last applicationcontext invoked...

RTFM as always... and true enough (obviously) there is support for loading those context files contained in a string array... my crappy spring application context utility class ended looking like this:

in another ubuntu related news...

maybe if the philippine government would be wise enough to promote the use of open source on all government owned schools there *might* be a pretty good chance that we could have something similar to these:

here's the link to the original blog entry...
probably dont need to say this... but ubuntu just rocks! hoary is rather slick!

a few tips on upgrading...

make sure you update warty to the latest first before changing all the warty to hoary definitions on your sources.list... this is my current sources.list:

--------------------------------------------------------------------------
## The following lines pertain to supported packages:
deb http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu hoary main restricted
deb-src http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu hoary main restricted

## The following lines pertain to security updates:
deb http://security.ubuntu.com/ubuntu hoary-security main restricted
deb-src http://security.ubuntu.com/ubuntu hoary-security main restricted

## Uncomment after release to continue getting updates:
# deb http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu hoary-updates main restricted

## IMPORTANT:
## Software from the following repositories are ENTIRELY UNSUPPORTED by
## the Ubuntu team, and may not be under a free licence. This means that
## software in these repositories WILL NOT receive any review or updates
## from the Ubuntu security team either. These packages are provided as a
## service to our users and nothing more.

## Uncomment the following two lines to add software from the 'universe' and
## 'multiverse' repositories:
deb http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu hoary universe multiverse
deb-src http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu hoary universe multiverse

## Uncomment the following line to add Java software:
deb http://jrfonseca.dyndns.org/debian/ ./

## deb http://ubuntu.tower.net.de/ubuntu/ hoary java

works quite well with the degatto, although i havent tested the internal modem yet... to use the ndiswrapper i have to apt-get the latest 2.6.10 kernel as the stock 2.6.8 kernel doesnt have the module with it... after that added ndiswrapper-utils and do the usual ndiswrapper -i to load the binary drivers of my el cheapo CB54G MSI wireless lan card...
